Question of the month: Are OTC hearing aids an eligible expense?

Dear Gina – I’ve read that hearing aids are becoming available to be purchased without a prescription. As an over-the-counter item, will they be eligible for reimbursement from my FSA?

A: You are correct. Beginning mid-October, 2022, many hearing aids will no longer require a doctor’s prescription. While we haven’t received definitive guidance as of this writing, I am confident that, in the same way over-the-counter reading glasses are considered eligible expenses as they provide vision correction, the same reasoning will apply to over-the-counter hearing aids. So, yes. We will be processing claims for reimbursement in both FSAs and HSAs.
